HOMILY THEME: LIVING STONES IN GOD’S HOUSEHOLD
BY: Fr Obinna Ezeaputa
Today, we celebrate the Feast of Saints Simon and Jude. They remind us of the importance of faith, perseverance, and our call to be living stones in the Church.

In our first reading (Ephesians 2:19-22), St. Paul writes, “You are no longer strangers or guests, but fellow citizens of the holy people and members of God’s household.” (Eph 2:19) We are part of a larger community, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone.
In our gospel reading (Luke 6:12-16), we see Jesus praying before choosing the Twelve. He spends the night in prayer, seeking guidance from the Father. Then he selects Simon and Jude, along with the other apostles, to continue His mission.
From these saints, we learn valuable lessons. First, prayer and discernment: like Jesus, we must pray and seek guidance in our decisions. For example, before making a significant life choice, take time to pray, reflect on Scripture, and seek guidance from spiritual mentors.
Second, faith and trust: Simon and Jude left everything to follow Jesus, trusting in His plan. When facing uncertainty, remember that God has a plan. Trust in His goodness and provision, even when the path ahead seems unclear.
Third, community and unity: as members of God’s household, we are called to build each other up. Volunteer in your parish or community, helping those in need. Offer a listening ear or supportive word to someone struggling.
Let us ask Saints Simon and Jude to intercede for us so that we may deepen our prayer life, discern God’s will, trust in His plan, and build up our community with love and support. May their example inspire us to be living stones, strengthening the Church, and proclaiming the Good News. Amen.
