HOMILY FOR 30TH MONDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: FREEDOM AND STANDING TALL

BY: Fr Deotacious Chikontwe SMA

Rom 8:12-17; Psalm 67(68):2, 4, 6-7, 20-21; Luke 13:10-17

Introduction

Brothers and sisters in Christ, today’s liturgical readings give us two important messages that fit together perfectly: being truly free and treating people with respect.

*Freedom in the Spirit (Romans 8:12-17)*

Paul tells us we don’t have to live like slaves to our bad habits or selfish desires anymore. He says, “If you live by your old nature, you will die. But if you let the Spirit guide you, you will live.”

This is the big news: We have been adopted by God! We are not just workers or servants anymore; we are children and heirs with Jesus. Because of this, we can talk to God with complete closeness, calling Him “Abba, Father”—like a little kid talking to their dad.

Our job now is to listen to the Holy Spirit, not to our old, dark ways. This Spirit leads us to real, lasting life.

*Healing and Dignity (Luke 13:10-17)*

The Gospel shows us what this freedom looks like in real life. Jesus is teaching in the synagogue, and He sees a woman who has been bent over for eighteen years by an evil spirit.

Think about that: eighteen years of being unable to look up, unable to see the world straight on, unable to look people in the eye. She wasn’t just sick; her dignity was taken away.

Jesus calls her over, touches her, and says, “Woman, you are now free from your sickness!” Right away, she stands up straight and praises God.

The religious leader gets angry. Why? Because Jesus healed her on the Sabbath (the day of rest). He points out how silly that is: they would take time off work to care for a sick animal, but they would keep this daughter of Abraham bound up just to follow a strict rule.

Jesus’ message here is clear: People matter more than rules.

*What This Means for Us Today*

As we start this new week:

1. Remember You Are Free: You are a child of God, an heir with Christ. Don’t let worry, guilt, or fear keep you bowed down.

2. Stand Up Straight: Jesus sets you free to live with your head up, ready to face the world with confidence in God’s love.

3. See Others: Look around you. Are there people in your life—at work, at home, or in your community—who are “bent over” by problems or treated like they don’t matter? Let’s follow Jesus’ example: prioritize their needs and dignity over just following the easiest, strictest, or most comfortable path.

*Conclusion*

Let us ask the Spirit of adoption to help us live in the freedom of God’s children, and to give us the sight and compassion of Christ to recognize and restore the dignity of all those around us who are bent down and in need of release.

I wish you a blessed New Week! The Lord be with you!
