HOMILY FOR 30TH SUNDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: JESUS, HAVE MERCY ON ME

BY: Fr Francis Onwunali

Jeremiah 31:7-9; Hebrews 5:1-6; Mark 10:46-52

“Son of David, Jesus, have pity on me”… “What do you want me to do for you?… Master, let me see again… Go, your faith has saved you” (Mark 10: 46-52). The readings of this Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B highlight the role of Jesus in bringing salvation to God’s people and expected response to the gift of wholeness.
In the first reading (Jer 31: 7-9), the prophet Jeremiah encouraged the people to rejoice at what God is doing and intervening in the life of those in exile. God wants the people to be whole again, so God is bringing and restoring them back to the land, giving back sight to the blind and the ability to walk to the lame. God is to be a comfort to them.
This prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who, in the gospel (Mark 10: 46-52), as He approaches Jerusalem to be the perfect High Priest and perfect Victim, encounters and give back sight to a blind man, Bartimaeus. In the midst of the crowd, Bartimaeus was the only one who could see who Jesus really is and proclaimed Christ, the Messiah. Of course, his faith saved him!

Dear friends, God is constantly doing great things in our lives. However, at times, it can be hard for us to see what Christ is doing in the midst of the sights and sounds of our lives. Jesus is already united with us in our human nature and understands what we are going through. We need to come to Him with an expectant faith.
I pray that as we journey in life today, the Lord may open our eyes to recognize Him in the “everyday” of our lives. As the perfect High Priest who offers sacrifice for our salvation (Heb 5: 1-6), may we be willing to join Him in the mission of salvation as Bartimaeus did. May we be Jesus unto others today. Have a Happy and Salvation-full Sunday!
