HOMILY FOR 30TH WEDNESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: THE NARROW DOOR

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

LUKE 13:22-30

An African proverb says, “Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.” Similarly, Jesus speaks of the narrow door when someone asks, “Will those who are saved be few?” Jesus answers, “Strive to enter by the narrow door” (Luke 13:23-24). The narrow door represents the tough and challenging path that leads to salvation, contrasting with the wide gate that many choose to follow (Matthew 7:13-14). By urging us toward the narrow door, Jesus encourages us to avoid following the crowd and to resist the way of the world, choosing instead the path of glory and honor.

Those who have achieved honor and success often share that their journeys were difficult, filled with rocky, thorny, and muddy paths. In the same way, the door that leads to heaven and salvation is narrow and demands humility, self-sacrifice, and focus. Parents who desire for their children to grow strong and unique often enroll them in the “school of hard knocks,” teaching them resilience and discipline. Pope Francis once said, “Let us think now, in silence, of the things inside us that prevent us from entering the door: my pride, my arrogance, my sins.”

Do we avoid the narrow door because we fear challenges, because of our pride, or because we’ve lost our focus?
