St. Augustine emphasizes that our earthly relationships reflect our spiritual ones. “The family is the domestic church,” he says. As children of God, we must obey His commandments and raise our families in faith (Ephesians 6:1-4). To achieve this, spend quality time with your family in prayer and scripture reading, attend Mass together regularly, and practice forgiveness and understanding within the family.
St. Thomas Aquinas explains that the narrow gate symbolizes the path of righteousness, humility, and self-denial (Luke 13:24). “To enter the kingdom of heaven, one must be willing to deny oneself and take up the cross” (Matthew 16:24). Volunteer your time and resources for a worthy cause, practice fasting or abstinence, and listen actively to others to embody this principle.
St. Teresa of Calcutta cautions against complacency, highlighting that earthly heritage or accomplishments do not guarantee salvation. “Our works are nothing but tiny stones in the divine mosaic” (Luke 13:29). Reflect on your motivations and intentions, engage in spiritual direction or mentorship, and practice gratitude to avoid complacency.
To strive for holiness, you may follow these guidelines:
Obey God’s commandments by attending confession regularly and following the Ten Commandments.
Cultivate humility and self-awareness through mindfulness and constructive feedback.
Practice self-denial and detachment by simplifying your lifestyle and giving to charity.
Serve others with love through volunteering and showing kindness to strangers.
As we journey through life, remember that our ultimate goal is heaven. May we strive to enter through the narrow gate, guided by faith, humility, and love. Amen.
