HOMILY FOR 31ST MONDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: MOTIVE FOR KINDNESS
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
Philippians 2:1-4, Ps. 131, Luke 14:12-14
An old saying goes, “One good turn deserves another.” Often, we unconsciously live by this principle, engaging in kindness that is transactional, expecting something in return. We may approach kindness as an investment, anticipating future rewards. But Jesus challenges us to move beyond this selective form of kindness, which only extends to those who can repay us. He says, “When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous” (Luke 14:13-14).

God’s love is unconditional, and as His children, we are called to love without expecting anything in return. This doesn’t mean we should exclude our well-off family and friends from our acts of kindness, but rather that we should be inclusive, extending kindness to those who are often overlooked—those who cannot reciprocate. Our guest lists and acts of charity shouldn’t be limited to the wealthy and influential, but should also embrace the poor, the marginalized, and those who have nothing to give in return.
Whenever we perform an act of kindness, it’s essential to reflect on our motives. Are we giving to receive? Or are we giving as Jesus taught—freely, inclusively, and without expectation?
