HOMILY FOR 31ST SATURDAY OF ORDINARY TIME (DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA) — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: YOU ARE GOD’S TEMPLE
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
The proverb, “Even the smallest temple has space for the devoted heart,” highlights that true devotion can flourish in even the humblest places. After Jesus’ death, his followers, facing persecution, worshipped in homes, open spaces, and catacombs. The Lateran Basilica in Rome, the first Church building in the world, holds a prominent place in Christian history and is celebrated on 9th November, the day of its consecration in 324 AD. Known as the “Mother of Churches,” it symbolizes the unity of Christians. Many Popes resided there, and it hosted numerous ecumenical councils.

While celebrating this great edifice, we also remember Jesus’ teaching on the temple. He referred to his body as the temple, one that would be destroyed and rebuilt in three days (John 2:19). Thus, the Church as the body of Christ is made up of people, not just a physical building. St. Paul emphasizes this, saying, “Brethren, you are God’s building,” and “You are the temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 3:9; 6:19). This reminds us that God’s Spirit dwells not only in places of worship but within each person. When Jesus cleansed the temple, he demonstrated the importance of purifying every sacred space, including our hearts. Do we remain aware of the Spirit of God who lives within us?
