HOMILY FOR 31ST SUNDAY IN THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: LOVE

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

Deut. 6:2-6, Heb. 7:23-28, Mk. 12:28-34

LOVE is the theme in this Sunday’s Gospel. It is at the very heart of the Christian Faith. Loving, the Christian way, involves the whole of one’s person in relation to God and great regard for others in the very measure we love ourselves.

The world had defined love in so many ways: “Love is a many splendored thing.”

“Love means never having to say you’re sorry!” “Love is blind!”

The last one had been contested by lovers because they claim that they see deeper and clearer. The non-lovers are the blind ones, in truth!

Christian loving involves but is not limited to feelings. It aims to ensure the good of the other. While worldly love tends to limit love to make the other feel good, Christian love aims to make the other good! Feelings are not absolute and reliable measures of the good and the bad. Not everything that makes you feel good is good. At times they are evil, and vice versa. Purposes are more reliable bases. Christian loving is always geared towards being good, towards being with God, towards salvation.

The cases of those addicted to drugs and alcohol depict well this point. When aching for it, they do not feel good. They would ask for a love one to provide them the drug or alcohol or money to buy them. A love one, not wanting to see the suffering, out of “love” may give in. While it is true that they are freed from the suffering, it is very much true that it is temporary. Worse, they are brought in deeper problem! Thus, it does not qualify as Christian loving.

Christian loving, as shown by the Lord Jesus, may also involve sacrifices, pains, selflessness, and even dying. Nothing and nobody can stop Christian love. Christian martyrs and saints realized that. If not, then, the God should have made us all always happy, rich, beautiful, powerful, healthy, successful, etc. But God’s only Son Himself, Jesus Christ, died on the cross out of love for us! Even death on the cross was embraced in order to show and concretize His love for us.

Is this your kind of love now? If not, you are invited to own it. If you are, then you are not far from the Kingdom!

Love made us live! Love keep us alive! Love will get us to the Kingdom of God, the Kingdom of Love!
