HOMILY FOR 31ST WEDNESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

LUKE 14:25-33

In our daily lives, we constantly assess costs—whether it’s for essential goods, transportation, or the cost of living. Our decisions and plans often revolve around budgets, with economists discussing direct, indirect, fixed, opportunity, and other types of costs. In theology, Dietrich Bonhoeffer also addresses cost, distinguishing between “cheap grace” and “costly grace.” Cheap grace seeks forgiveness without true repentance and blessings without sacrifice, while costly grace demands giving up our comforts and even our lives for something greater.

Jesus, in today’s reading, speaks directly about the cost of discipleship, which can seem startling: “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26). Here, “hate” means to “love less”—to prioritize God above all, even family. Mother Teresa echoes this in saying, “For love to be real, it must cost, it must hurt, it must empty us of self.” True discipleship involves putting Jesus first, listening, learning from Him, and living out His teachings every day.

The question we face is simple yet profound: are we prepared to embrace the true cost of discipleship?
