HOMILY FOR 34TH TUESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: MANY WILL COME
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
We live in a world where deceivers have taken center stage. Many people claim to be who they are not, quacks pose as professionals, markets are replete with counterfeit products, and a rising number of questionable places are disguised as houses of prayer. When Jesus predicted the destruction of the temple, his listeners asked: “Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign when this is about to take place?” And he answered, “Take heed that you are not led astray, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them.”

In other words, Jesus warns against false prophets and preachers who deceive gullible and ignorant people about the end of the world. Another passage of the Scriptures says, “In later times some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, through the pretensions of liars whose consciences are seared…” (1 Timothy 4:1-2).
Jesus wants his disciples to beware of false voices and pay attention to his voice and message. He says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers” (John 10:27, 5).
Are we careful enough to differentiate between the genuine and the counterfeit—people, products, prayer houses, preachers, prophets, and pastors?
