HOMILY FOR 3RD FRIDAY IN EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” “My Flesh is true food, and my Blood is true drink.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 9:1-20; Psalm 117:1-2; John 6:52-60
As Jesus identified with his Church and disciples in today’s first reading and as he reassures us of his real presence in every Eucharistic encounter in the gospel, some attributes of God’s love for us come to light. In addition to being in total solidarity with his Church and us, for the purpose of redeeming God’s image in us, we come to know that no heart is too deep or hard for God to touch, especially, when such a heart is simply weak or in error.

Saul’s vicious and treacherous outlook was tamed once God touched his heart in the conversion encounter with Christ. He went on to serve the Christ he persecuted and encountered, with his very life until death. He would account for a significant part of the Church’s mission in the First Century. When God needs an instrument, He knows how to employ it, the reason we must commit people whose hearts need to be touched in our families, Church and communities to God’s merciful love. The reading also teaches us that there are no coincidences in life. People of faith must learn to see or discern God’s design in the web of processes that lead to certain resolutions in life. God arranged it all and Ananias would be on ground to lead Saul aright. The narrator knew; neither Saul nor Ananias knew. Human coincidences=God’s design. It is not luck or human wisdom; it is God’s providence and blessing. Celebrate it whenever you experience it. The greatest of such providences and blessings is the gift of Jesus to us as our bread of life; real food and real drink. Stop debating it; embrace it and be a Eucharistic-centered disciple by coming to Jesus daily in Holy Communion.
Lord Jesus, nourish us with your body and blood unto eternity. Amen.
