HOMILY FOR 3RD MONDAY IN LENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: SEARCH FOR HEALING

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

Luke 4:24-30

Sickness is like a visitor—no one invites it, but sooner or later, it shows up at everyone’s door. Illness spares no one, whether rich or poor. Naaman, the Army Commander of the King of Syria, suffered from leprosy despite his high status. In biblical times, leprosy was a shameful disease, much like AIDS in modern times. Lepers were ostracized and forbidden from mingling with others.

Naaman searched for healing in many places but found none until he came to Prophet Elisha in Israel. As wise people say, “An old doctor’s cure may not be found in a new doctor’s book.” Elisha, a gifted healer, instructed Naaman to bathe seven times in the Jordan River. Initially, Naaman resisted, dismissing the river as too common. But when he finally obeyed in faith, he was healed.

Similarly, the people of Nazareth refused to believe in Jesus because they saw Him as just a fellow native from a humble background. Jesus remarked, “No prophet is accepted in his own country.” While His own people rejected Him, strangers like Naaman and the Samaritan woman recognized His power.

As we journey through Lent, are we taking the time to seek healing—of body, mind, memory, heart, spirit, and soul? *”Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved; for Thou art my praise” (Jeremiah 17:14).

2 Kings 5:1-15a; Luke 4:24-30 | Monday, 3rd Week of Lent
