HOMILY FOR 3RD WEDNESDAY IN LENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: LAW AS GUIDE
BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa
“The law is like a recipe—follow it exactly, or you’ll end up in hot water.” Laws are also like instruction manuals we usually see whenever we buy new products, equipment, electronics, or automobiles. These instruction manuals guide us on how to operate the equipment and how best to enjoy it. In addition, these manuals help us maximize the equipment’s benefits and know the right usage and maintenance.

Similarly, Divine laws are designed to serve as instruction manuals for us who are on the journey of life. They are roadmaps that lead us to our desired final destination—heaven. They are derived from God’s wisdom and designed for those who love Him (1 Cor. 2:6-10). Jesus corrected the wrong impression that He came to abolish the Law and the Prophets. He said: “I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17).
This means that His teaching builds on the teaching of the Law and the Prophets. Besides, Jesus teaches us a positive way of looking at God’s laws through His Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5). He also summarized the Ten Commandments into the love of God and love of neighbor. The law of God is not a burden but a guide toward living a fruitful and blessed life. Do we obey the law out of love for God or fear of punishment?
