HOMILY FOR 3RD WEDNESDAY OF ADVENT — YEAR A

HOMILY FOR 3RD WEDNESDAY OF ADVENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “God saves”
BY: Fr Francis Onwunali
Today in our liturgy, we experience the announcement of the Incarnation, the taking flesh of the Eternal Son of God, our Saviour, and His role in the Economy of Salvation
In the first reading (Jer 23: 5-8), Jeremiah, speaking to the people at the time of Babylonian exile, tells them, unlike the leaders of their day, God is sending One who will be of the royal family of David. This Chosen One will bring justice and peace to the oppressed.
In the gospel (Matt 1: 18-24), Matthew presents the loving role of Joseph towards Mary in handling the inconceivable that has befallen him. Not only was he considerate and sacrificial in dealing with Mary and her pregnancy, but he was open to doing the will of God when it was revealed to him. The child to be born shall be called Jesus – “God saves” and is the fulfilment of Isaiah’s prophecy of Immanuel – “God is with us.”

Dear friends, our life as human beings is inherent with struggles, and the interesting aspect is how we handle them. Even the Holy Family struggled as a result of Jesus’ presence in their life, before, during, and after His birth. What is my approach to challenges and struggles in life?
I pray as we journey in life today, we remember that as we struggle with human decisions, God will always step in at the proper time to encourage and support those who are willing to do His will because, “God-is-with-us” and “God saves”. May we equally be instruments of reassurance to those who are going through tough times. With the Psalmist, we say: Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, Who alone does wondrous deeds… may the whole world be filled with His glory. Have a courage-full day!
