HOMILY FOR 4TH FRIDAY IN THE EASTERTIDE — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me”

Acts 13:26-33, Ps. 2:6-11, John 14:1-6

Today’s gospel is one of Jesus’ most reassuring instructions to his disciples in the days before he died. It is one of the readings mostly used at funerals, but more than letting us know that there is room for everyone in heaven, the Lord really invites us to be people who trust him and our God to bring us through all life’s challenges into eternal life. Just as Jesus went before us, so also must all flesh go in due course; every one of us. So, if eternal life with God is our destiny, we must gear our entire lives toward that goal, trusting that Jesus, the way, the truth and the life, will get us there.

Yet while we await that moment when we can take our places with God in heaven, we must in the meantime, like St. Paul, continue to proclaim the good news that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, by our word, works and life. Let us sustain that effort through thick and thin, without being afraid of anything or anyone since Christ is always with us.

Lord, heal our fears and make us your courageous witnesses. Amen.
