HOMILY FOR 4TH FRIDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “CONTINUE TO LOVE EACH OTHER LIKE BROTHERS…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Hebrews 13: 1-8; Psalm 27: 1, 3, 5, 8b-9ab; Mark 6: 14-29

We begin the last chapter of the Letter to the Hebrews with exhortations that remain valid today: love of neighbor, prisoners and strangers, forgiveness of one another, shunning sin, immorality, greed and selfishness, imitation of our good leaders of faith, sustaining the dignity of marriage and family as instituted by God, and living courageously and confidently under God’s blessed assurance.

Such confidence and courage strengthened John the Baptist through difficulties and persecution, standing firm and sturdy amidst adversity. Such courage is demanded of us today, in relation to others in our families, churches, society and communities; and in relation to God, who has infused us with his own fortitude. The narrative on John’s imprisonment and death is closely related to Jesus’ instruction on discipleship. John’s passion and death served as a warning to Jesus as it looked ahead to Jesus’ own passion and death. They also serve as a warning to us today that the path of authentic discipleship is fraught with obstacles, rejection and persecution. It is not a bed of roses. Telling the truth and standing by truth puts disciples on a collision course with the forces of evil and darkness.

Lord, give us the courage to live and die in and for the truth. Amen.
