HOMILY FOR 5TH FRIDAY IN EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “WE AND THE HOLY SPIRIT HAVE DECIDED…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 15:22-31; Psalm 56(57):8-12; John 15:12-17
Working together with the Holy Spirit was the hallmark of the Early Church from the very beginning. Acknowledging her origin as a “child” that is borne of the Holy Spirit, the Church always counts on the Spirit to give her direction in tough times.

Today’s first reading evidences one of such situations, where in recognition of the role of the Holy Spirit and the need for all to comply as a result, the leaders communicated their decision also as the decision of the Holy Spirit, for the life of the Church. Indeed, how true it is that “great things happen when God mixes with humans.” That letter is the “first example of written communication between churches” for the preservation of unity in the “universal Church.” Total obedience to Christ’s command to love is the key to such unity in our time. That also is the only guarantee that we have for the Holy Spirit to continue to work with us as individuals and as Church. Jesus reminds us that his call to love is a call to friendship, not subservience; a call to drink fully of the life that flows forth from Jesus’ expression of his boundless love for us by laying down his life; and that his is an invitation to openness to his friendship in trust, “fearless intimacy and frankness in prayer.” No mere human can offer us such friendship. Let us embrace it wholeheartedly together with its obligation on us to be for others what Christ is for us. It would be helpful whenever we find it difficult to love to remember that Christ did not love us because we were always found worthy of his love. Let us not wait until people deserve our love before we love. No one fully deserves or merits Christ’s love. Always, it is a gift; a free and underserved gift.
Lord, teach us love. Amen.
