HOMILY FOR 5TH MONDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “NOT TO US, O LORD, BUT TO YOUR NAME GIVE THE GLORY.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Acts 14:15–18; John 14:21–26

The cycle of persecution, flight and consequent spread of the gospel as a blessing, repeated in today’s first reading, celebrates God’s love that turns adversarial situations into opportunities of grace and good for us. In truth, all things work together unto good for those who live in faith. Despite tough situations, Paul and Barnabas’ works were attended with miracles and power, but in all, they insisted that the glory must be given to God, the source of all that is good, even when they had all the opportunities to take the glory.

Jesus, in the gospel, reassures us again today, that just as obedience to his law is the proof of authentic discipleship, so also it is the proof of one’s love for Christ. One, who loves Christ, keeps his commandment and such love brings disciples under the protective providence of the Father, who in turn sends the Holy Spirit as advocate to us. In the weeks before Pentecost, the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives will be highlighted. Today, the Spirit is introduced as a teacher, who will continue to remind us of all that God demands of us. Let us cultivate personal relationships with the Holy Spirit; let us be constantly attentive and always listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and our journey through life will be smoother and goal oriented.

Lord, send us your Spirit and renew the face of the earth. Amen.
