HOMILY FOR 5TH THURSDAY IN EASTER — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “I have told you this so that my own joy may be in you and your joy be complete.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 15:7-21; Psalm 95(96):1-3, 10; John 15:9-11
God’s command, to which we are called, is a way of obedience as an act of love. It initiates a path of humble submission to God’s will that is complied with, not out of compulsion, but freely, out of love for the God who loved us first. That is the obedience that the gospel invites us to so that we may remain in God’s love. When Jesus tells us that he loves us just as deeply as the Father has loved him, we must realize that his response to that love led him to the Cross, but the Father’s love for him carried him through the sufferings he endured and did not abandon him, even in death.

In like manner, our response to Christ’s love for us must zealously urge us on in obedience to his command, knowing that he covers us with his love through all of our life’s experiences and challenges. In the first reading today, we see how the Early Church resolved the situation regarding the admission of the Gentiles into the community. They listened to the Holy Spirit, who first opened the doors to the Gentiles and in love and obedience decided to be more inclusive without imposing unnecessary burdens. The Holy Spirit taught them openness and love the way no human would have been able to. Let us remain open to the Spirit as we struggle with today’s challenges in our church and communities. Let us remain open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, individually and personally, so that we may be more attuned to God’s ways, especially in our outreach to fellow human beings, including less privileged and those marginalized by society, family and national and international systems.
Lord, keep us in your love that our joy may be complete. Amen.
