HOMILY FOR 5TH TUESDAY IN EASTERTIDE — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “PEACE, I LEAVE WITH YOU; MY PEACE I GIVE TO YOU.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Acts 14:19-28; Psalm 145:10-13, 21; John 14:27-31

Given the situation in today’s world, home and abroad, it is obvious that Christ’s gift of peace means more to us now that it has ever meant. Little wonder it is at the heart of Pope Leo XIV’s prayers and wishes for our world. We need peace! We struggle in all aspects of life; at home, in our schools, in the larger society, in religious settings, in the social and political arena, and even individually within our very selves. There is so much going on around us that so many have actually become very distressed.

Today’s gospel reminds us that, in Christ, we find peace; peace that nothing and no one can take from us. That knowledge should move us to forge a stronger relationship with Christ. Troubles may still abound but Christ’s presence in us gives us a completely different perspective on life and on our struggles, to the point where we become untouched by the threats of the menace around us. Such peace makes our spiritual lives impervious to the threats of the evil world. Ever wondered how Paul, Barnabas and the early disciples kept up with their witness and proclamation despite multiple maltreatments and life-threatening encounters? Instead of being broken down, they felt rejuvenated after each experience and looked for more opportunities for witness. That is the result of the reassurance attached to that gift of peace when Jesus said: “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” May Christ renew his peace in us, remove fear from our lives, and bring calm to our troubled world.

Father, come and dwell in us; illuminate us and our darkened and troubled world with your light, presence and peace. Amen.
