HOMILY FOR 5TH WEDNESDAY IN LENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “BLESSED BE THE GOD OF SHADRACH, MESHACH, AND ABEDNEGO…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Dan 3:14-20, 91-92, 95; Psalm (Dan 3:52-56); John 8:31-42

Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego are great symbols of faith; bold witnesses to God’s love for us under difficult circumstances. As King Nebuchadnezzar challenged their faith and the strength of their God, these three brave and resilient young men defied the prospect of a gruesome death by burning and reaffirmed faith in their God, even if that God does not deliver them from death by fire. It turned out from the witness of Nebuchadnezzar himself that Israel’s God decided to go into fiery furnace with the three young men instead of preventing the calamity. Instead of wreathing and wailing in pain and horror, the young men became part of the dancing flames of the fire, celebrating God’s greatness, while the horrified King proclaimed the “God of Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego” blessed.

In the gospel reading, the opposition and aggression against Jesus continues to intensify. Yet, Jesus stays on the message, reaffirming his identity as God’s Son and Sent-One, and recommending faith as the proper response for those who would embrace God’s presence amongst them. Such faith, and not blood connection, is what makes us descendants of Abraham. Such faith ensures the kind of trust and obeisance (in our relationship with God) that get us through tough situations and times.

Lord, thank you for being with us always; strengthen us with the constant awareness of your love and care. Amen.
