HOMILY FOR 7TH FRIDAY OF EASTER — YEAR A

HOMILY THEMME: “DO YOU LOVE ME?”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Acts 25:13-21, Ps. 103:1-2,11-12,19-20, John 21:15-19

Throughout Easter season, we have been nourished by Luke in the Acts of the Apostles, detailing Christian witness in the years following Jesus’ resurrection, ascension and the descent of the Holy Spirit, and the Gospel of John, where Jesus continually fed us with lessons on the implication of the life imparted to us by virtue of our baptism into his death. As we conclude the season, the readings remind us of some very import features of Christian responsibility in our time.

As Paul heads to Rome, based on his appeal against been tried in Jerusalem, we are reminded on the demand of Jesus just before he ascended that we be witnesses to the ends of the earth. Paul’s witness and his journey to Rome completed that mandate for him. For you and for me, that mandate continues to be in force until we have exerted all our energies and resources in bringing the good news to all available frontiers, wherever they may exist. While making that effort, our motivation must be single-minded in nature: our love for Christ, which in itself is our response to God’s love for us. When Jesus asked Peter to reaffirm his loyalty and love thrice, it was more than just a restoration after the manner of his three-fold denial. Jesus makes Peter realize that the only disposition that can conquer the opposition we face in our mission is the pure and unfettered love of Christ; love so strong and so profound that it gives life to others, as is evident in Jesus’ three-fold instruction to Peter (feed my sheep). Finally, Christian life, after all is said and done, must be lived in response to Christ’s call and command: “follow me.”

Lord Jesus, you know we love you; heal our deficiencies and help our little faith. Amen.
