HOMILY FOR 8TH TUESDAY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: TO THE UPRIGHT I WILL SHOW THE SAVING POWER OF GOD
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Ecclesiasticus 35:2-15, Ps. 50:5-8,14,23, Mark 10:28-31
Today’s readings educate us on righteous and truly wise living. The book of Sirach teaches that it consists in keeping God’s commandments, refraining from evil and avoiding injustice, giving generously and cheerfully to the Lord and to his service because He gives generously to us, offering Him unblemished offerings, avoiding corruption, bribery and extortion, and living justly under the rule of the God of justice, who rewards good and punishes evil.

Sirach takes us back to something that we said about wealth yesterday by noting that ill-gotten wealth is displeasing to God. In addition, he notes that we cannot bribe God with our gifts. In other word, we must back our good deeds and giving with our obedience to God’s Word. The gospel crowns it with Jesus’ education of his disciples on authentic discipleship: to put God first, over, and above all else, and let nothing come between God and us. It is a call to an unalloyed commitment to our relationship with God, based on a vision of life that is beyond earthly boundaries. In both readings, such a virtuous and loyal relationship is not without its rewards. While humans would generally prefer the rewards to be earthly and right now, the gospel talks about the reward of eternal life in the age to come, in addition to the blessings of our earthly life time. Let us continue to strive earnestly in our service of the Lord here on earth with our eyes set on heavenly rewards. Peter’s remark on leaving “everything” in order to follow Christ as well as the Lord response challenge us all as we strive earnestly. The “everything” that is left behind in the process of discipleship means that material possessions, human relations, or even personal interests must not come between God and us, the difficulties and persecution notwithstanding. The rewards of an such unhindered relationship with God are then stated clearly: a full measure of what one has given up, and in addition, eternal life.
Lord, guide us on the path of life eternal. Amen.
