HOMILY FOR 8TH WEDNESDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A.
HOMILY THEME: THE UPSIDE-DOWN KINGDOM!
BY: Fr Deotacious Chikontwe SMA
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to focus on the wrong things to feel important? We live in a world that is always chasing the next upgrade, higher status, and better positions. We want people to notice us, and we want to feel like we are ahead of everyone else.
But on this Wednesday, the Bible gives us a reality check. Saint Peter and Jesus work together to show us what truly matters. Peter reminds us how incredibly valuable we are to God—not because of money or gold, but because Jesus gave His life for us.
Then, Jesus shows us what that looks like in daily life: true importance doesn’t mean sitting on a throne and ordering people around; it means stepping down to help others.

From Our Gospel Reading
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is walking ahead of His disciples on the road to Jerusalem. The disciples can feel the tension, and they are scared. Jesus pulls them aside and tells them exactly what is about to happen: He is going to be arrested, mocked, beaten, and killed.
And how do James and John respond to this heartbreaking news? They ask for a promotion!
“Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask… Let us sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” (Mark 10:35, 37)
It is easy to get mad at James and John, but honestly, we do the same thing. How often do we pray only asking God for things that make our lives easier or better than others? The other ten disciples got angry, but only because James and John beat them to the punch. They all wanted to be the boss.
Jesus calls them together and completely flips their idea of success upside down. He says that in the world, rulers love to boss people around.
Jesus tell them: “But it shall not be so among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
How do we find the strength to live like this?
From Our First Reading
Saint Peter gives us the answer in the first reading. He reminds us that we don’t need to fight for status because God has already given us the highest value possible. You were not bought with temporary things like gold or silver. You were saved by the precious blood of Jesus.
When you realize that the King of the universe died to save you, you stop trying so hard to prove yourself to the world. You don’t need to climb over others to feel important when Jesus has already shown how important you are to Him.
What Do We Learn Today?
A New Look at Success: True greatness in God’s eyes is not about how many people serve us, but how many people we choose to help.
Your Real Worth: You don’t need a fancy job or lots of money to be valuable. Your value was proven on the cross.
Things That Last: Earthly things wither and fade away like grass, but God’s love and His Word last forever.
Conclusion
Jesus ends the Gospel with a simple rule for our lives: “For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Today, let’s stop worrying about who is the most important or who is winning the race. Instead, let’s look at the people around us. Who needs a helping hand? Who needs a kind word or someone to listen to them? You are deeply loved by God—now go out and share that love by serving others.
Midweek Blessings
May the Lord bless you and keep you safe during the rest of this week.
May He free you from comparing yourself to others, and remind you of how much He loves you.
May He give you a humble heart, so you can help and serve others with a happy spirit.
And may His words bring peace to your mind and joy to your heart today and every day.
Go in peace, and live a life that honors God. Amen.
