HOMILY FOR CHRISTMAS DAY YEAR A.

THEME: HAPPY CHRISTMAS.

BY: Fr. Gerald M. Musa

There are so many activities and ceremonies during the Christmas season and these include decorations, exchange of gifts and good wishes. These activities are simply signs that point to a deeper reality, but are not the essence of the celebration. The reason for the season is – The Word of God – Jesus Christ, who came into the world to live among human beings. The poetic hymn of the Evangelist John introduces Jesus, the Word of God in the following words, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God” (John 1:1).

The Word is essentially God made visible in human history. A God who was perceived as transcendent (distant) God now appears as an immanent (present) God, and Immanuel, God with us. According to St. Charles Borromeo, Jesus was “Sent to show us truth itself, to teach us how we should live, to share with us the source of all goodness, and to enrich us with the treasures of his grace. Finally, he was sent to make us sons of the Father and heirs to eternal life.” Yes, it is Christmas and a time to celebrate God’s goodness, blessings and love to us. Let us celebrate this in season and out of season.

We pray for God’s presence and intervention in the spiritual, political, social, economic, and security crises that confront us daily

I wish you a very happy Christmas.

Isaiah 52:7-10; Hebrew 1:1-5; John 1 1:1-18
