HOMILY FOR EASTER FRIDAY — YEAR A

HOMILY FOR EASTER FRIDAY — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “IT IS THE LORD.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Acts 4:1-12; Psalm 118:1-4, 22-27; John 21:1-14
The disciples relapsed to their former ways. Of course, Jesus went after them and met them wherever they went. That is a lesson on mission and how we must handle the weaknesses of others. They worked all night, without Jesus, and they caught nothing. Their efforts were fruitless.

Once Jesus came onto the scene and they obeyed his instruction to cast their net, they caught so much fish that their boats were overwhelmed. Indeed, in vain does the builder labor who builds without the Lord (Psalm 127:1). Of course, like every miracle in John, the catch of fish pointed beyond itself to the fact that Jesus was on ground and his presence makes all the difference. Amazingly, although they caught nothing before Jesus came on the scene, yet, there was breakfast ready for them; Deus providebit (“God will provide,” always when we open our hearts to His presence). The big lesson is that we need Jesus with us always; he is Emmanuel, God with us. If he is with us, we have the courage of Peter and John in the first reading and don’t mind what we suffer for his name. They were able to affirm, even under threat to their lives, that “there is no salvation through anyone else” apart from Jesus. That remains true to date. Let us cling to him, and as often as we see those who have gone their former ways, let us strive to meet them where they are in order to bring them back to Christ. That is our mission.
Lord, sometimes we go our separate ways; please bring us back to being centered on you as obedient disciples. Forgive our lapses. Bless the work of our hands and never let us be parted from you. Amen.
