HOMILY FOR EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD

HOMILY FOR EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD

HOMILY THEME: EASTER: ENTERING THE CELEBRATION MOOD

BY: Rev Fr Joseph Nyarko Asare

HOMILY: Acts 10:34,37-43/Psalm 118:1-2,16-17,22-23/Colossians 3:1-4/John 20:1-9

This day was made by the Lord; we rejoice and are glad. Peter, Paul, Mary Magdalene and the beloved disciple (kindly claim that position) are the people we meet in our readings, today, discovering and sharing the Easter joy. Looking at these people, we see disciples from varied social classes, educational background and public image. We see a responsible fisherman in Peter, a scholar in Paul, a self-employed rich lady in Mary Magdalene (Cf. Luke 8:1-2), and a young man only called the beloved disciple.

A common trait of them all is that they were sinners who repented and never went back to intentional, deliberate sins. After looking up to things that are above, they never looked down. When they slipped like Peter, they quickly got back on track. They had consistent temptations like thorns in their flesh like Paul, but they kept fighting on with the unfailing grace of God. That is why they could celebrate the Easter joy.

Christ is risen and dies no more. We have every reason to rejoice, even in locked rooms like the early Church. All we need is to embrace His freedom, avoid deliberate sins and rejoice in the power of the resurrection. Don’t allow your past to hinder your joy. Peter denied Jesus three times in a role, Paul persecuted Christians and Mary Magdalene was demon possessed. These didn’t stop them from celebrating the joys of the resurrection. Don’t let anything stop you from rejoicing. Christ is alive, alleluia!
