HOMILY FOR FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: Blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by God would be fulfilled!

As we gradually approach the Christmas celebrations, today’s liturgy invites us to reflect on the importance of faith and hope in awaiting the divine promise.

In the first reading, Micah prophesies that the ruler of Israel will come from Bethlehem, an insignificant town in Judah. This shows clearly that God’s ways are different from man’s. With faith, we not only believe divine plans that seem humanly impossible and non feasible, we also anticipate the fulfilment of such a plan without despair.
In the second reading, we are shown that obedience to God’s will is more essential to all sacrifices and oblations. Without total surrender to divine providence, our sacrifices to God are valueless.
The gospel presents the beautiful scene of the visitation. Mary’s visit to Elizabeth brought joy to John the Baptist and the Elizabeth. As Elizabeth decrees, Mary is blessed because she firmly believed in the fulfilment of the divine promise.
Beloved in the Lord, at the coming of Jesus in History, lack of faith deprived many of the joy of salvation he brought forth to the world. Those who believed, however, received the abundance of life and eternal happiness. As we intensify our preparations for the celebration of his coming in history, it is important we believe firmly in his assurances of salvation in his second coming. A Christmas party without faith in Christ’s salvific event in history and in his second coming is a celebration deprived of its main purpose.
May God give us the grace to believe in his power to offer us salvation. May our lives and actions as we prepare for the Christmas season increase our faith and draw us closer to experiencing the joy of our salvation.
Happy Sunday
