HOMILY FOR FRIDAY 19TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “SP THEN, WHAT GOD HAS JOINED TOGETHER, MAN MUST NOT DIVIDE.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Ezek 16:1-15, 60, 63; Psalm (Isaiah 12); Matt 19:3-12
The relational language in today’s readings calls our attention to two very important aspects of relationships that are fast eroding in our society. Marriage and family have become the most threatened institutions in our society. The rate of divorce worldwide is very high. Families are breaking up and becoming dysfunctional, and commitments mean nothing to so many. It is so bad that many of our young ones are either scared of marriage or think nothing of it. That is in addition to the lives that are negatively impacted with each broken relationship. Amidst all of this, we have many exemplary situations where people are holding fast to the demands of today’s gospel, despite ridicule, challenges and mistrust. It demands sacrifice on the part of spouses and family members. The place of God in marriage must also be taken seriously. If God is not in the picture, the center cannot hold and things would certainly fall apart.

We pray for all married couples for the grace of fidelity and strength. We pray for broken marriages and families for healing, forgiveness and restoration. The first reading, using marital language to describe the relationship between God and Israel, reminds us of the other relationship that is fast falling apart; that between God and humans. People want less and less of God in their lives and want to live on their own terms. There is God and the earlier we figure that into our own lives the better for us and our world. Without God, we really have nothing that is serious enough beyond ourselves to measure our level of responsibility toward others and ourselves. We pray for faith and commitment in our relationship with our God. Without such fidelity and loyalty, we become idolatrous because we give our loyalty to other forces.
Loving God, heal the lives of your people; heal broken marriages and families; never let us be separated from you. Amen.
