Homily for Friday February 4 2022

Eccl. 47:2-13; Psalm 17(18):31,47,50-51; Mark 6:14-29

When preachers talk about God being a rich God, not wanting us to suffer at all, but only interested in our comfort, I immediately think that the god they talk about must be the god of their worldly philosophies. Yes! A quick search through scriptures reveals that many of those who served the Lord faithfully were martyred one way or another. Those who weren’t outrightly killed, suffered greatly for the sake of the gospel. So what is it about martyrdom?

John the Baptist insisted that Herod was wrong in marrying his brother’s wife. He didn’t change his message because a powerful man was involved. He lost his head for it, but gained a much greater crown. Friends, the life of a Christian witness is seldom comfortable, in the worldly sense of overwhelming riches and pleasure. It’s not God’s way. We must stop thinking about the consequences of the truth and simply tell it. We must speak against corruption, the unhealthy politics in our schools, etc. If many saints ended up martyred for speaking truth, then there must be something very rewarding about martyrdom. Are you with me?

Good morning dear. God bless your weekend ahead.
