Gary Chapman’s book is titled 5 love languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate. In this book, Chapman explains 5 different ways in which people demonstrate love: Gifts; Quality time; Words of Affirmation and Encouragement; Committed service to the other, and Intimacy. Chapman observes that the best way to know the love language to speak to a beloved one is to observe closely how the person expresses love to other people. Jesus is a polyglot who spoke so many love languages. He spoke the language of love mainly in his incarnation, ministry, passion, death, and resurrection. After the resurrection, Jesus asked Peter three times: “Do you love me?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” Jesus wanted to make Peter know that pastoral care of the flock requires total commitment. Having denied Jesus three times, Jesus wanted Peter to reaffirm his love three times. We all have a common vocation to love. Love of God and love of Jesus are not mere lip service but require making sacrifices. It is easy to fall in love, yet only people who remain faithful in love are great. It is easy to declare love, but love requires commitment. Jesus still speaks different languages of love to us every day. How do we respond to his love? Jesus is asking you, “Do you love me?”
