HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF THE FIFTH WEEK OF LENT YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: GOD IS WITH US

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Jer. 20:10-13)
Friday of the Fifth Week of Lent (Day 38 of Lent)

In the day’s first reading we hear Jeremiah’s distress against the devil. The devil, his enemies, had become bolder and vicious. They tried to weaken Jeremiah by letting him undergo embarrassment and frustration. But Jeremiah was strong because he believes God is with him. God will not forsake him and will even exact vengeance against the devil for what they were doing. Jeremiah’s faithfulness matched God’s faithfulness.

In the Gospel Jesus was again confronted by the Jews. They did not like Jesus’ claim to be the Son of God. Yet Jesus pointed out Scriptures to them regarding humans as gods. Jesus was God’s communication of His love. He came as a fulfillment of the Father’s promise. God continues to be faithful to His people. God will protect His people specially against the devil. The devil does not stop in fulfilling its mission. He always wait for that moment when we are weak. Then it will pounce on us and deliver the killer blow. When we abandon God and rely only on ourselves, material things, and others, we will be defeated and succumb to sin. The more we are separated from God, the weaker we become against sin, the more probable for us to sin. We take refuge on Jesus the Son of God. He had proven Himself to us once. He promised He would never leave us. In the Spirit, He fulfilled this promise. Everyday we ought to recognize God’s presence in our lives. His graces continue to work. Never at any moment should we entertain the thought that God had abandoned us. Maybe we did but He never will.
