HOMILY FOR FRIDAY OF THE THIRD WEEK OF LENT YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: LOVE; THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Mk. 12:28-34)
Friday of the Third Week of Lent, (Day 24 of Lent)

In the day’s Gospel Jesus responds to the question of the greatest commandment. Love of God with the whole self and love of neighbor like oneself was Jesus’ answer. Of course, Jesus meant both love to be done. But love of God anchors love of neighbor. Love of God leads to love of neighbor but not necessarily vice versa. This was manifested when Jesus met with His disciples by the sea after His resurrection. Three times Jesus asked Peter if Peter loves Him. Everytime Peter answered “Yes, Lord!, Jesus would follow it up with the command to take care of His sheep and His flock. Jesus was scheduled to go back to His Father and He wanted Peter to lead the apostles. He wanted to be assured of Peter’s loyalty. Remember that Peter showed weakness when he debied the Lord three times.

The point of the exchange is for Peter to esrablish his love for Jesus first before he can take care of Jesus’ flock. To lead the Church or the People of God, the apostles, and for that matter, the pope, bishops and priests should establish their love for Jesus.

Our love for God is most basic and foremost. It will be the source and foundation of our love of neighbor. God is our Creator. He is omnipotent and all knowing. No doubt, the greatest love is love of God!
