HOMILY FOR GOOD FRIDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD – YEAR B

HOMILY FOR GOOD FRIDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: ABSOLUTE LOVE BEYOND IMAGINATION

BY: Rev Fr Joseph Nyarko Asare

HOMILY:

(Is 52:13-53:12/Ps 31/Heb 4:14-16; 5:7-9/Jn 18:1-19:42)

At any stage of his passion, Jesus could have stopped any attack, pain or torment. He had power to command anything he desired for he is God. He failed to send angels for protection. He could have brought wolves to devour his enemies like Elijah. Indeed, he could have vanished from the Garden of Gethsemane, or at the hall of Pilate or from the cross.

Jesus chose to suffer for our sake. The sin of Adam and Eve placed us under four defects. Knowledge, joy, eternal life and union with God were lost because of sin. We were chained in the abyss and the devil became our unwanted “slave master”. We condemned ourselves to hell and there was no way out.

On Good Friday, Jesus took our place, our shame, our chains, our disfigured personalities, our toils, enslavement and disgraced. He demonstrated the nature of the human condition through his pains, sufferings and disgrace. By his sufferings and death, Jesus took our position. He exchanged our shame with his glory. This is an indescribable love.

On this day, we greatly admire God’s love in Jesus. We stand with grateful hearts. The greatest appreciation we can offer is to live in obedience to his will all our days. God loves us and we remain indebted to him all our days.

~In appreciation to God’s love and mercy
