HOMILY THEME: GOD REVEALS HIS PRESENCE!
BY: Fr. Casmir Nkamuke
Ex 34: 4 – 9, 2 Cor 13: 11 – 13, Jn 3: 16 – 18
The sign of the cross is the most frequently said prayer. At our private and communal prayers, during the Holy Mass, in times of distress, and even during happy moments. As common as the prayer is, we rarely comprehend the mystery we profess in it. Today, we are invited to celebrate the revelation of God to the world as Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit
There is no human vocabulary to comprehend fully the way God is in himself. Our relationship with God is thus based on how He reveals His presence to us as creator (Father), redeemer (Son), and sanctifier (Holy Spirit). The mystery we celebrate today is that of the three persons in one God. The Trinity is not a belief in three gods or three modes of one God, or of three unequal persons comprising of one God. It is the belief in the mutual communion existing in the Three Persons in one God. Thus, when God reveals himself as creator, it is not just God the Father creating, but the work of the Trinity. It is thus not surprising that the readings of today do not dealing with the explication of the Trinitarian dogma but rather dwells on the revelation of God’s presence to human race.

In the first reading, God reveals himself as a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. He is the Lord who had mercy on the Israelites, despite the fact that they were stiff-necked, the God who pardons our sins and iniquities whenever we turn from evil and turn to him. In the second reading, God reveals his presence as a family, one that always dwells with us when we mend our ways, live in peace, and agree with each other. God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and offers us grace, love and communion. In the gospel, God reveals himself as one who shares in our humanity to offer us a share of his divinity. In all these three revelations, it is the love of God that makes us privileged heirs of God’s kingdom.
Beloved in the Lord, the Trinity is more of a mystery to be lived and believed than a concept to be explicated and explained. Having revealed his presence as a God who loves and cares for us, and as one who is eternally in communion, God invites us to emulate the Trinitarian unity in all our lives and actions. The love of God should urge us to extend our kindness, generosity, and concern to each other. This love should serve as a testimony that we all share a common destiny and as an encouragement that we should work together to achieve this destiny. The revelation of God to us should spur us to shun nepotism, individualism, racism, and sectionalism, and embrace communality and conviviality.
When we come together to work for good and against evil, we share in the divine life. God is love, and he who does not love does not know God. As partakers of the divine life, we are challenged to make God’s presence revealed among the world’s abandoned, among the dejected, among the victims of war and all sought of exploitation and violence, and especially among many children of God who are facing crisis of faith. These persons need God’s intervention, and can get God’s intervention through our moral, material, and spiritual support. God reveals his presence to us as a testimony that faith and good works are inseparable. While we struggle to deepen our knowledge of the Trinity which can only be revealed fully at the end of time, may we express our Trinitarian faith not only by professing our creed, but also by living out this creed among our fellow beings. Through this God’s presence is revealed to the world.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit remain with us both now and forever! Amen.
Happy Holy Trinity Sunday!
