HOMILY FOR MEMORIAL OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

HOMILY THEME: THE PURENESS OF MARY’S HEART

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY:

(Lk. 2:41-51) Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In the day’s Gospel, Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we have the finding of Jesus in the temple. Joseph and Mary suddenly realized that their son, Jesus, was not with them on their way home. So they went back to the temple and found Jesus listening to the teachers and asking them questions as well. When they questioned Jesus, Jesus’ answer, “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”, was mysterious for them. Yet, Mary and Joseph just accepted Jesus’ response.

This feast comes after the feast of the Sacred Heart. We kept close the recognition of the two hearts. Today’s feast recognizes the pureness of Mary’s heart to compliment her Son’s Sacred Heart. Conceived already freed from original sin because she will become the Mother of God, Mary maintained her purity not only physically, but more so spiritually. She accepted everything in faith and obeyed the will of the Father. She took care of Jesus like any Jewish mother by teaching Him the faith.

The Beatitudes says, “Blessed are the pure of heart for they will see God.” Seeing God, as far as the Scriptures is concerned means death. One cannot endure seeing God because of His divinity, purity, and mystery. But one who is pure, holy. and immaculate will have that opportunity. Purity makes us united and one with God. Purity is not only Mary’s virtue. Purity is everyone’s call.

Thus, it is something we must aspire. Mary should serve as our inspiration. To be one with God is our goal and destiny. We should not settle for anything less. Maybe, in the present time, these virtues of holiness and purity had become an impossibility if not unpopular and absurd. They had become too good to be true and attainable virtues. Yet, we believe otherwise. Mary was human like us in everything. She was graced by God, and so are we. She made use of that grace, and how about we? We must recover the thinking and the belief. By living these virtues, we hope to make others realise that they are still relevant not only in the next life but more so in this life.
