HOMILY FOR TUESDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME  [YEAR B]

HOMILY FOR MONDAY, 2ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

THEME: Obedience: A Path to Spiritual Growth and Salvation

BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa

Today’s first reading from 1 Samuel 15:16–23 teaches us about the importance of obedience to God’s will. God commanded the Israelites to completely destroy the Amalekites and their livestock, but King Saul disobeyed God. Instead, he spared the life of King Agag and kept some of the best sheep and cattle for himself.

When Samuel confronted him, Saul attempted to defend his actions, but Samuel made it abundantly clear that Saul had disobeyed God’s instructions and followed his own desires. As a result, God regretfully told Samuel that He had rejected Saul as king.

The Catholic Church emphasizes that obedience to God’s will is indispensable for our spiritual growth and salvation. In the Garden of Eden, the disobedience of Adam and Eve led to the entrance of sin into the world and highlighted the significance of adhering to God’s commands. Throughout history, God has consistently summoned His people to obedience through his prophets and finally through his Son, Jesus Christ Himself.

As Christians, we are called to surrender our will to God’s and follow His commands. This requires humility, trust, and a willingness to let go of our own desires. When we obey God’s will, we open ourselves to His grace and guidance, and we become instruments of His love and mercy.

Let us examine our hearts and lives to see if we are truly living in accordance with God’s will. Are there areas where we may be compromising our faith or following our own desires, such as:

Failing to uphold objective moral truth and instead embracing personal beliefs or societal norms that contradict God’s Word?

Disregarding Church teaching on the sanctity of human life and the importance of natural family planning and instead choosing to follow our own desires regarding reproductive health?

Rejecting Church teaching on the nature of marriage and human sexuality and instead embracing cultural norms that conflict with Scripture and Tradition?

Prioritizing material possessions and wealth above spiritual growth and service to others, thereby elevating our own desires above God’s will?

Valuing personal autonomy and self-interest above communal worship and service, and thereby neglecting our responsibilities to the Body of Christ?

Let us seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, to help us grow in obedience to God’s will. May we learn from Saul’s mistake and strive to be faithful servants of God, obeying His commands with joy and humility. Amen.
