HOMILY FOR MONDAY AFTER EPIPHANY (1)

As long as you have repented of your sins and have confessed them, God forgives you. Your past becomes history, and they can no longer stand against you before God.

HOMILY FOR MONDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

HOMILY THEME: REPENT & BELIEVE IN THE GOSPEL!

BY: Fr. Benedict Agbo

HOMILY: * 1 Jn 3 : 22 – 4 : 6, Matt 4 : 12 – 25.

In this new year, it is important that we begin with the things that really matter in spirituality : faith and love. Today’s 1st reading says that ‘his commandment is that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and that we should love each other as he commanded us’. One thing that affects our faith negatively is our conscience. When we know we are not doing the correct thing, it makes us spiritually weak to ask God anything with confidence.

So Jesus advices us to repent and believe in the gospel. When we repent, our faith is boosted and we feel the miracles and grace of God more abundantly. Repentance and faith are the two conditions for inheriting the kingdom of God.

The final proof that he remains in us is the Spirit that he has given us and the test of the true Spirit is the spirit that acknowledges God as coming in the flesh – the spirit that helps us see the FLESH THAT WAS TAKEN & THE FLESH THAT WAS GIVEN. So spirituality must be translated into the fruits of holiness ; love, joy, peace, patience, self control, etc, Gal 5 : 22. Mary the Mother of Jesus is the woman whose flesh was taken, Jn 1 : 14 and the flesh that was given us is the Eucharist, Lk 22 : 17 – 20 for our spiritual nourishment. Any spirit that neglects these may not be the true Spirit. And that spirit will not emphasize repentance. It will only emphasize the wrong version of prosperity. Spiritual authenticity must be our watchword in this new year.

May God bless you today!
