Paul Rusesabagina was an African soldier who is a good example of humility and faith. While he was not a military soldier in the traditional sense, he was a hotel manager of the Hôtel des Mille Collines in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. He showed great courage and humility during the Rwandan Genocide of 1994. When the war in Rwanda broke out and there was violent hostility between the Tutsi and the Hutu, Rusesabagina provided refuge for more than a thousand Tutsi in the hotel.

He took this risk out of compassion and goodness and as one who believed in the sanctity of human life. He provided not only security for those whom he sheltered, but also food and water that sustained them. It is his story that was captured in the film Hotel Rwanda. Rusesabagina was good, humble, and caring like the Roman Centurion who sent elders of the Jews to ask Jesus to heal his paralysed and distressed servant.

When Jesus was on his way to the centurion’s house, the centurion sent friends to Jesus, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof (Luke 7:6). He was indeed a humble man. Wise people say, the clothing of humility never goes out of style. Can we imitate such qualitative faith, exceptional humility, and loving care of the centurion?
