ACTS 1:1-18; JOHN 10:11-18; MONDAY,

An African proverb says, “There is room for everyone in the house of God.” When the people of Israel were thinking that salvation was only for circumcised Jews, God revealed to Peter that salvation was for all, including the Gentiles (Acts of the Apostles 11:1-18). Jesus told his disciples, “And I have other sheep, that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice. So, there shall be one flock, one shepherd” John 10:16).

This goes to show the universality and unity of the Church which embraces people from every culture, background, class, and race. In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus shows how a Samaritan, who is considered to be an outsider, and one who is outside the flock became an example of love and compassion (Luke 10:25-37).

The Vatican II document stresses the importance of baptism for salvation and addresses the question of the sheep outside of the fold by stating, “Those also can attain to salvation who through no fault of their own do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, yet sincerely seek God and moved by grace strive by their deeds to do his will as it is known to them through the dictates of conscience.” This means that salvation is ultimately in the hands of God. How inclusive and welcoming are we as a Church?
