HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: TRUSTING GOD WHEN LIFE IS UPSIDE DOWN

1 Kings 17:1-6; Psalm 120(121); Matt 5:1-12
Introduction
Imagine being losing everything that makes you feel safe—your job, your money, your comforts—and being told, “Don’t worry, God will send birds to feed you.” It sounds crazy, right? But in today’s readings, God asks us to look at life in a completely different way.
Today, we see what it means to trust God when life feels dry and empty, and how true happiness is found in the places we least expect.

From Our First Reading
In our first reading, the prophet Elijah is in big trouble. He just told a wicked king that a terrible drought is coming. Right after that, God tells Elijah to go hide by a small stream in the wilderness.
Think about how scary this was for Elijah. He is running for his life. But notice how God decides to feed him: “I have commanded ravens to feed you there.”
Ravens are wild birds that usually steal food, they don’t share it! Yet, God uses these unlikely birds to bring Elijah bread and meat every morning and evening. Elijah had to drop his pride and stop trying to make sense of it all. He just had to trust that God would take care of him.
About the Gospel Reading
Centuries later, in the Gospel, Jesus goes up on a mountain and gives His famous sermon, called The Beatitudes.
If Elijah’s story sounds strange, Jesus’ words sound totally upside down. He looks at a crowd of poor, tired, and hurting people and says:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit.”
“Blessed are those who mourn.”
“Blessed are those who are treated badly.”
The word “blessed” means to be truly happy or deeply peaceful. Jesus isn’t saying it’s good to suffer. He is saying that when we are hurting and empty, we are ready to receive God. When we run out of our own strength—just like Elijah in the desert—we finally let God step in and help us.
Jesus is showing us that true happiness doesn’t come from money, power, or having a perfect life. It comes from letting God fill our hearts.
What Do We Learn Today ?
God helps us in ways we don’t expect: Just like God used wild birds to feed Elijah, He might help you through a situation you didn’t plan for, or through a person you wouldn’t expect.
We need to make room for God: To be “poor in spirit” means admitting we can’t do everything on our own. If we think we are perfect and don’t need anyone, we leave no room for God’s love to enter.
God’s peace stays with us in hard times: Jesus promises comfort to those who cry and a kingdom to those who struggle. True peace doesn’t mean having a life with no problems; it means knowing God is right there with you through the problems.
Conclusion
As we start this week, look at your own life. Are you going through a dry season? Are you sad, tired, or worried about the future?
Don’t lose hope. The same God who sent birds to feed Elijah is the same Jesus who looks at you today and calls you “blessed.” Let go of the need to control everything.
Trust that God knows exactly what you need, and let Him fill your heart with His peace today.
