HOMILY FOR MONDAY JULY 11 2022

St Benedict, Abbot

Is.1:10-17; Matt.10:34-11:1

Sometimes we forget that God knows and sees even the darkest recesses of our hearts. We build castles of sin, dwell in them, and presume God’s forgiveness and mercy. This is rather unfortunate since God hates pretence. He says to us through the prophet Isaiah, “take your wrong doing out of my sight. Cease to do evil, learn to do good, search for justice, help the oppressed, be just to the orphan, plead for the widow.”

Take St Benedict for instance. Unable to stomach the evil in his day, he decided to become a solitary hermit at Subiaco. Although many loved him, there were those who sought to poison him because of the discipline he imposed on them. Benedict’s monastic rule reminds us to become more of ourselves as we struggle towards perfection. Friends, though the kind of authenticity and sincerity that Christianity demands will often lead to conflict and opposition, from family, relatives and friends, Jesus says to take our crosses and follow in his steps. We cannot afford to be discouraged.

Good morning dear. God bless your week ahead. St. Benedict, pray for us!
