THEME: BALANCED CHRISTIANITY

BY: FR GERALD M. MUSA.

An enlightened Christian is a balanced person who knows religion is not only about fasting, but also about feasting. St. Paul emphasizes a balanced Christian life when he says, I know how to feast and I know how to fast (Philippians 4:12). “Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and the people came and said to him, Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “As long as they (the wedding guests) have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast” (Mk. 2:18, 20).

Jesus sees his coming as the coming of the kingdom of God where he is the groom and his listeners are the wedding guests. The prophets Isaiah and Hosea use the story of the wedding feast to describe the marriage between God and his people (Isaiah 62:5; Hosea 2:21-22). God always desires the happiness of his people and so he invites them to a banquet where they will enjoy the best meals and where he will wipe away the tears from every eye (Isaiah 25:6-10). He is a God who cares about our welfare and who prepares a table for us in the sight of our foes (Psalm 23:5).

A balanced Christian knows when to fast and when to feast. Are we among those who think that religion is only a dry, gloomy and ascetic spiritual exercise?
