HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK OF EASTER

HOMILY FOR MONDAY MAY 2 2022

Greek philosophy and science say there are four essential elements for human survival and these are 1. Fire ; 2. Air ; 3. Earth ; 4. Water . Spiritual analysts say these four elements correspond with what Jesus declares : 1. I am the light of the world ; 2. I am the breath of life ; 3. I am the bread of life ; 4. I am the living water . This implies that in Jesus Christ , we find everything we need for spiritual survival . Surprisingly , many follow Jesus , not for the salvation of their souls , but for the earthly bread they can get from him . Jesus tells his followers to set their priorities right . He said : ” Do not labour for the food which perishes but for the food which endures to eternal life which the son of man will give you ( John 6:27 ) . In as much as food , material things and pleasure are good , the word of God and the bread of life give greater satisfaction . St. Athanasius , whose feast day is today , preached about the power of the bread of life many centuries ago . He said : ” … After the great and wonderful prayers [ Eucharistic prayers ] have been completed , then the bread is become the Body , and the wine the Blood , of our Lord Jesus Christ . Do you follow Jesus for the wrong reasons ? Do you ask God only for your material needs ?
