HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE 4TH WEEK OF EASTER

HOMILY THEME: CALLED UNTO CHRIST THE GOOD SHEPHERD

BY: Rev. Fr. Jacob Aondover ATSU

HOMILY: READINGS: ACTS 11:1-18, PSALM 42, JOHN 10:1-10
Jesus is the good shepherd who leads his people rightly and to the haven they so desire (Ps.107:30). He goes before us making sure that our ways are clear and when we’re in trouble, he rescues us. Amos 3:12 speaks of the shepherd rescuing two legs or a piece of an ear out of a lion’s mouth. We also hear David tell Saul in 1 Samuel 17:34-36 how he’d battle with the lion and bear to save his father’s sheep. Also, Isaiah 31:4 speaks of the crowd of shepherds called out to deal with the lion. For the ideal shepherd, the good of his followers, their life and well being is of paramount importance. He saves, them from peril and guarantees their existence and ensures that they live life to the fullest.

What do we make of leaders who steal from their followers; those who withhold the salaries of their employees, who extort from them; those who embezzle wealth meant for the well being of others? These are thieves who only come to steal, kill and destroy. They leave their sheep to be scattered, attacked, ravaged and killed by poverty, ill health, hunger and so on. For the prophet Zachariah (11:16), the shepherd (leader) who makes no attempt to gather his scattered sheep is a false one.

Today’s world is full of false or bad shepherds: doctors and nurses have lost that touch of care and sympathy that they hitherto had for their patients. They have become heartless, inconsiderate, ‘anti-life’, wicked and sadists. Politicians are in the game for the good of their stomachs and nothing more; reason why some feed pigs, crocodiles, dogs, etc. and give them more decent accommodation while their people suffer wantonly.

Moreover, today is a call for us to follow only the VOICE of Christ who only calls us to LIFE, fullness of life. Today is a call to walk through that door opened for us by Christ, which door leads to LIFE. Hearing his voice and walking through him, the door of life entails living righteously. Today therefore becomes a call to righteousness, a call to life and indeed a call to CHRIST the author and sustainer of life.
