HOMILY FOR MONDAY OF THE 5TH WEEK OF EASTER

HOMILY THEME: THE NEW ‘NORMAL’ AFTER CHRIST

BY: Fr. Benny Tuazon

HOMILY: (Jn. 14:21-26) Monday of the Fifth Week of Easter

This post resurrection meeting with the disciples reveals the new normal after Jesus leaves. Jesus reminded them about the importance of obeying the commandments. It is a sign of our love of Him. Loving Jesus means loving the Father. It is ascertained by the coming of the Holy Spirit who will serve as an Advocate. We will not be lost. The Holy Spirit who will abide in us will connect us with the Father.

As an Advocate, the Holy Spirit will guide and protect us. Let us imagine an accused who is facing a trial. He cannot defend himself because he is not knowledgeable of the law. The court will assign him a lawyer, an advocate. With the advocate with him, he will be assured of receiving justice. The advocate will speak for him and guide him to a fair resolution of his case.

The Holy Spirit will serve as advocate for us. Christian life is full of challenges to our faith. Our relationship with God will be tested. At times we will be confused, lost, or desperate. We will feel alone. The Holy Spirit will be available for us. We must summon it and fill our hearts. The battle will not be outside but within. Our encounter with the Holy Spirit will be in our person. When we open ourselves to the Holy Spirit, we can be assured of God’s presence. It means we will abide by His commands. When we do, it makes us a loving person.

When we love in the Spirit, we do great things. We can forgive and love our enemies. These are some of the hardest things we are asked to do. Without the Spirit in us, we cannot do them. We will also be generous, faithful, and at peace. We will imbibe it’s gifts. The life in the Spirit is a life with and in God. This is Jesus’ gift to us when He left. Let us take advantage of it. With the Spirit, Jesus is always with us.
