Gen.4:1-15,25; Mark 8:11-13

Our passage of scripture today is as familiar as it is shocking. On the one hand, it is quite shocking that Cain would murder his brother just like that, even when it was clear Abel did nothing wrong. This shows how deeply wicked the human heart could get when evil begins to reign in it unfettered. On the other hand, what is even more surprising is perhaps the fact that God still listens to Cain, and places a mark of protection on his forehead to prevent anyone from killing him. Can you beat that?

Friends, God is extremely merciful. This is simply the fact, whether we like it or not. However, he doesn’t want us to go around like Cain, refusing to do the right thing ourselves, but murdering those who do. He wants us rather to rise above selfishness. Why must we continue to seek signs and wonders, when we could in fact become the signs that our world so desperately needs? Rather than constantly pray to God for protection, why can’t we do all within our power to protect that brother (sister) that so much depends on us. In the end, God will surely ask us “where is your brother?”

Good morning dear. God bless your week ahead.
