HOMILY FOR MONDAY MAY 30 2022

We admire people who are brave, especially ordinary people who remain strong in the toughest situations of life. Bravery is not a lack of fear but saying and doing the right thing despite fear. Brave people are those who have courage even in the face of danger and threats. Jesus told his disciples ahead of time to know that the world will oppose, mistreat, persecute, suspect, reject and intimidate them. He told them, “…In the world, you will face persecution, but take courage, I have conquered the world” (John 16:33). So many good people face all kinds of persecution today. Today, there is a wave of religious persecution. Many Christians face persecution in their homes, workplaces, and schools because of their religious beliefs and for doing what is right.

Religious persecution comes in different forms, including discrimination, injustice, violent attacks, denial of the right of worship and freedom of religion, abduction of children, and terrorism. Many give up their faith, principles, and struggles in the face of dangers and threats. Courageous people overcome self-doubt and maintain their faith, beliefs, and principles. When we are unable to stand for what is right and just, we make ourselves liable to fall for anything. To be brave is to stand for what is right, true, and just. How strongly do we hold on to our faith during persecution?
