HOMILY FOR SATURDAY 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR I (St Charles Borromeo, Bishop).

THEME: Know your place!

By:  Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor

Rom. 11 :1-2a.11-12.25-29; Ps. 94:12-13a.I4-15.17-18 (R.14a); Luke 14:1.7-11

There’s a saying that ‘pride goes before a fall.’ This is so apt. In today’s first reading, St Paul reminds us that God never rejects his people. We are the ones who rather choose to have hardened hearts sometimes, as some of the Israelites did. While those who are seen as worthless sinners are daily accepting God’s mercy in their lives, and embracing righteousness, the rest of us who feel entitled, continue to be obstinate in sin, presuming God’s forgiveness, without ever asking for it.

Friends, it is quite important not to forget that we are sinners, redeemed by God’s grace. When we stay humble, taking the lowest seats at all times, God will definitely raise us up. St Charles Borromeo humbled himself so much so that he brought reforms to a deeply secularised and corrupt Church. Have you heard of Sunday School? We owe the tradition to Borromeo, who set up a confraternity to teach Catechism to kids. Though of noble birth and rich ancestry, he spent his energies feeding the poor. Opposition to his reforms was so great that one rich and corrupt monk, disguised as a lay man, shot him on one occasion. Borromeo even had to deal with senior priests who were practising witchcraft and sorcery. Hmmm! Evil did not begin today. He died at the age of 46. May we find courage in opposition through his intercession, Amen!

Good morning dear. God bless your weekend. St Charles Borromeo, pray for us!
