HOMILY FOR SATURDAY OF 15TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME.

THEME: I SAW HIM.

BY: FR. GERALD M. MUSA.

Mary of Magdala (Mary Magdalene) is one of the most misunderstood women in the scriptures. The book Da Vinci Code’ is among the many books spreading inaccurate information and misconceptions about her. She was considereda notorious sinner. Jesus saved her and delivered her from seven demons that tormented her.

Like St. Paul, she would have said: I am the foremost of sinners; but I received mercy for this reason, that in mne, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience for an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life” (1 Timothy 1:15-16). In gratitude to Jesus, she travelled with him and his disciples and generously supported them in their ministry (John 11:11). She accompanied him to the Calvary where she stood under his cross with Mary his mother. After his burial, she courageously went to the tomb in the early hours of the morning.

She exemplifies the words of scripture that say: Perfect love casts away fear” (1 John 4:18). She was the first to see the risen Christ and it was she who announced to his disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” (John 20:18). Can we learn to open our hearts to Jesus as Mary Magdalene did? Can we learn to love courageously and proclaim that we too have seen the mercy and goodness of God?
JOHN 20:1;2, 11-18 22 July, Memorial of Mary Magdalene, a disciple of the Lord.
